How long does it take to drive from Kona to Hilo? It takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to drive the roughly 100 miles between Kailua-Kona and Hilo going along the Hamakua Coast route 19, while the southern Kau route 11 takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. The scenic "Saddle Road" across the middle of the Big Island normally saves about 10 miles and 10 minutes compared to the north coastal route - but expect some delays on this route due to current road construction.
